When transactional analysis becomes an art of living

The beauty of TA lies in its creative dimension. Whether supporting a parent seeking balance, an expatriate in the adaptation phase, or a professional facing a dilemma, each situation finds an echo in these tools. Transactional analysis isn’t just a theory: it’s a living language that invites us to explore and transform our relationship with the world.

Observation missions that awaken consciousness

I propose enriching “observation missions”: identifying your preferred transactions, noticing moments of permission, those signals we send ourselves to act more consciously and authentically, identifying your “inner drivers”, those messages that influence our behaviors: “Be Perfect,” “Be Strong,” “Try Hard,” “Please Others,” and “Hurry Up”. Recognizing which one guides us most often allows us to better understand our reactions and expand our choices.

What fascinates me about transactional analysis (TA) is its ability to transform theoretical concepts into concrete and personal experiences. It’s like offering a palette of colors to someone who only saw in black and white. Suddenly, nuances appear, possibilities multiply.

Tools that come to life in your hands

I’m delighted to see my clients embrace these tools. For example, I often suggest that they keep a small journal for “stroke hunting”. “Strokes” or “caresses” are these signs of recognition so important in our lives whether positive or negative, verbal or non-verbal, internal toward ourselves or external toward someone else, unconditional, linked to being, conditional and linked to having and doing. It’s exciting to see them return the following week with their discoveries, their insights, sometimes even with drawings and collages!

TA then becomes a playground where everyone can experiment, observe and transform their relational patterns. It’s this playful and creative dimension that allows awareness to anchor deeply.

Creative exercises to explore your inner world

Here are some creative proposals I like to share with my clients:

  • The Ego states journal: note for a week when you are in your Parent, Adult or Child state. Use different colors, symbols or even collages to represent these states.
  • The collection of permissions: identify each day a “permission” you give yourself (permission to rest, to say no, to be imperfect…) and note how it transforms your day.
  • Transaction mapping: during an important conversation, draw the exchanges as arrows between Ego states. This often reveals patterns invisible to the naked eye.
  • The “strokes” album: create a small notebook where you collect the signs of recognition received and given. Include how you felt receiving or offering them.
  • The driver detector: invent a symbol for each of your inner drivers and place it in your environment to remind yourself to be aware of their influence.

Transactional Analysis thus becomes a living approach enriched by your creativity and personal experience. Each client brings their unique touch, transforming these concepts into customized tools for their own development.

Don’t hesitate to invent your own exercises! Creativity is often the shortest path to awareness and change. And if you wish, I would be delighted to accompany you in this creative exploration of your inner world.
